On the days of the equinoxes, the center of the sun crosses the celestial equator, and the terminator (the light dividing line separating the light from the dark part of the planet) is perpendicular to the earth's equator. This means that the northern and southern hemispheres receive the same amount of light and the day is approximately equal to the night.
